Lubatud seletus tuleb. Asi on lihtne. Tuleb kududa 2 kolmnurkset rätikut, alustades klassikaliselt nii-öelda kaelast (musta joone keskelt). Miks just nii? Aga siis asetsevad värvid diagonaalselt. Punane joon näitab "rätiku" keskmist silmust, lillad jooned näitavad värvide jaotust.

The promised explanation is coming. It is fairly simple. You have to knit 2 triangualr shawls starting from the mid-neck, so to say, in a classical way (this would be from the middle of the black line). Why in this way exactly? Because in that case the colours will be distributed diagonally. The red line shows the central stitch of the "shawl" and the purple lines show how the colours are situated.

Niisiis, tuleb rätikud valmis kududa, aga mitte maha kududa. Rätiku laius (must joon) = seeliku laius (puusade ümbermõõt + veel mõni sentimeeter). Thus, you have to knit the shawls but don't bind off! The width of the shawl (the black line) = the width of the skirt (hip circumference plus some centimetres/inches for better fitting). After that you have to place them in the way they are in the picture. Now you have to knit them together (3 needle bind off): along the green lines (you'll get a parallelepiped) and then along the blue lines (the result is a cylinder). And what is a cylinder? In fact, it is a usual straight skirt, nothing else. Once you have the cylinder, you have to decide which edge is the upper one and to pick up stitches with smaller needles (then I decreased about 10 % of the stitches). Then you have to knit the case for an elastic band and to insert the band.

Two important observations. (1) The skirt is straight. If straight skirts do not suit you, this is not your construction. (2) The width and the length are interconnected (think about triangular shawls: the longer you make a shawl, the wider it becomes). Of course you can lengthen the upper part (the waistband) and, if you wish, you can add a bottom edge but then you have to think it over because it might upset the balance (meaning the distribution of the colours).

I am pondering now how to achieve the same colour distribution but (1) the bottom edge should not be in zigzag and (2) the length would be independent from the width. However, this would be an entirely different construction.

Väljas on -11 kraadi (hommikul oli isegi -15). Seega väljas pildistamine on välistatud. Sees on aga valguse probleem. Siiski Ave abiga sai mõned pildid.

I would not by this yarn again. An ideal yarn for such a skirt would be Aade Lõng or Lithuanian Teksrena or something of the kind. I was aware of it in the beginninb but decided to go after it because of the colours and because I wanted to do the experiment. If the readers wish, I can discuss the construction next time.

The shawl is finished! Today we knitted together at Kristiina's place (Kristiina, Ave and myself) and, as this colour suits Ave, I asked her to model. She was very kind to agree. Thanks a lot!

The progress is really slow. What I have already knitted is heavy, the rows are quite long.

Tegelikult see on kolmnurkne rätik (kingituseks). Lõng on Saaremaa vill 8/2, kuid pean ütlema, et see on Aade Lõng 8/2-st jämedam. Koon vardaga 4,5 mm. Proovisin ka 5 mm-ga ja olekski selle juurde jäänud, aga keeruga parempidised silmused olid liiga lõdvad. Nii et jäi 4,5 mm.

Actually, it is a triangular shawl (a present). The yarn is Saaremaa wool 8/2 but it I have to say that it is thicker than Aade Lõng 8/2. I am using 4.5 mm needles. I tried 5 mm as well and would have used them but stitches knitted through back loop were too loose. So 4.5 mm it is.

Today we got together with Ave (in the first picture) in order to knit together. It was just a quick photo: Ave is wearing a jacket she made from my pattern of my black jacket, only that she used Aade Lõng 8/3, the Raasiku factory wool. She is working on a sweater from the same yarn for her boy.

I have been asked to explain how to knit top down set-in sleeves with a lace pattern. Now I am going to show a particular example. In general, the rules are as follows: once you have a vest, so to say, pick up stitches at the upper third of the armhole, knit them, pick up a new stitch in the end of the row, work back row, pick up a new stitch at the end etc. Once you get to the straight part (under the arm), pick up all stitches and work in the round. I have "invented" the trick only to learn later, that this is recommended by Barbara Walker and possibly other knitters. But this is not very important. The quetion is, what to do when you are knitting a garment with a lace pattern?

For sleeves, I have the following advice: first, make a chart on your computer/checked paper. It seems reasonable to start with one stitch pattern repeat plus something for the edges. For instance, pick up 14 stitches right side facing you, knit them on the wrong side (I always knit this row on the wrong side but it is a matter of taste), pick up one stitch. Below you have a part of the big chart, that is, not the whole sleeve but one pattern repeat and the first row of the next repeat. The row no 0 is the row where you knit 14 stitches and pick up 1. New stitches are designated with X. The chart shows odd and even rows. As you can see, one of the rules is, to put it bluntly, do not squeese in a pattern repeat at any price. That is, don't make a yarn over if it is before picking up a new stitch, even if the number of stitches allows it.

In this particular sweater, I picked up stitches untill I had 49 stitches (35 rows). Then I picked up under the arm 8 stitches and worked in the round. If you want to see the whole chart, go to Õpetused/Patterns on the right and choose Varruka skeem/Sleeve chart. And then? Usually I purl or knit or make a little lace pattern on the stitches I picked up under the arm. Later you can make decreases at the expence of these stitches without disturbing the lace pattern.

It is again about this skirt. Nothing can help, with such a weather you cannot very much take photos outside. But not every in-doors setting is suitable either: either the light is non-existant or there are too many things around. Still, Kristiina was able to create something of it, thanks!

Having worn the skirt for some time, I think it is not impossible and knitting sideways provides a lot of new possibilities. There will be more knitted skirts for sure.

Olen reisilt tagasi. Näitan, mis on juba tehtud. Alustan teist varrukat ja kui see valmis saab, koon alla.

I am back. This is what I have so far. I am going to start the second sleeve and, once it is finished, I will continue downwards.

Siiamaani on kulunud peaaegu 3 tokki. Uskumatu! Ostsin 6 tokki, et olla kindel. Ilmselt saaks S-suurusele sviitri vabalt 5 tokiga. Lõng on meeldiv, sobib kenasti pitsimustriteks, ka ripskude näeb reljeefne.
I have used up almost 3 balls. Unbelievable! I bought 6 balls to be on the safe side. Probably, it is possible to make an S-sized sweater with 5 balls only. The yarn is pleasant, it is suitable for lace patterns and also garter stitch has a nice definition.

See on mu praegune kudum. Värv on pigem nagu esimesel pildil. Lihtne laineline muster, mis sobiks paljudele lõngadele (kujutan ette, et eriti linasele). Lõng on Lana Gatto Gomitolo, vill, 50 g/220 m.

This is my current project. The colour is more or less right in the first picture. It is a simple wave-like pattern that is suitable to a variety of yarns (I imagine, it would be especially nice for linen). The yarn is Lana Gatto Gomitolo, wool, 50 g/220 m.

See sai tõesti kiiresti valmis. Tõsi küll, seelik on üsna lühike ja oli pigem eksperiment.

I really got this one rather fast. But, on the other hand, this skirt is quite short and it was more of an experiment.

Loodetavasti saan hiljem paremad pildid, täna sadas vihma (see on jaanuarikuu, uskumatu!). Kindlasti teen veel ühe seeliku põiki ja mõne teise mustriga.
I hope to get some better pictures later, today it was raining (it is January, unbelievable!). I am definitely going to make one more skirt sideways and with a different pattern.

Natuke tehnilist juttu: see on sirge toru. Tean, et lühikeste ridade abil saab teha alt laieneva, aga tahtsin just seda konstruktsiooni proovida. Paistab, et sirge seelik pole minu puhul välistatud. Kummi tunnel on ka olemas, kumm on sees. Arvan, et musta lõnga kasutasin minimaalselt.
Some technical information: it is a straight tube. I know that with short rows you can achieve increases in the bottom but I wanted to try this out. It appears that a straight skirt is not completely outruled in my case. There is a case for an elastic band and the band is inside. I think I used the black yarn in minuscle quantities.
Homme lähen järjekordsele reisile, sellepärast ei luba postitada reeglipäraselt. Aga koon igal juhul.
Tomorrow I am going on another trip and because of this I cannot promise regular post. But I will be kniting in any case.

Triibuline/Striped

The first knit of the year is from Raasiku wool and it is striped. This will be a skirt, knitted sideways. The colours are completely wrong, in reality, purple is more purple and blue is much darker.

Proovilappi kududes tundus, et mustad triibud võiksid olla üksikud, mitte 3 kaupa. Kudusin nõnda tükk aega ja siis vaatasin, et ei ole huvitav. Otsustasin teha nii, nagu praegu pildil paistab. Järjekordne näide sellest, et proovilapp võib olla petlik.
When I swatched, it appeared that the black stripes could be isolated and not 3 at a time. I knitted in this way for a while and then realized that it was somehow uniteresting. I decided to re-knit in the way it is now in the picture. Another example of how a swatch can be misleading.

It is helpful to wind variegated yarn in such a manner that you would see the colour changes. So far I had to "interfere" only once when a black stripe would have been in the middle of the black-blue section.

I have been asked about the kimono pattern. Here is an explanation how I do it. The drawing is rather primitive but I hope it will be clear. We start from the red line (imaginary shoulder line). Make a provisional cast on. The number of stitches = 2 x the length of one sleeve + the distance from shoulder to shoulder. Knit from the shoulder line as much as to get the desired width of the sleeve. In this way you get a rectangle (the black one).

Then we have to determine the width of the neck opening. According to this remove the provisional cast on from left and from right. In the middle, some stitches will remain on the waste yarn (the neck opening). Place the stitches on the needles (green lines). You can knit a little bit each shoulder separately. In this way the opening is slightly lower in the front.

Now we join the front part. Start from the right edge, knit in the direction of the neck opening. Cast on with a waste yarn as many stitches as you have on the waste yarn for the neck opening on the back piece. Knit these stitches with the main yarn and then knit the stitches of the left shoulder. Then work as you did with the back piece (blue rectangle). Try on as you go. When the width of the sleeves is right, fold the work along the shoulder line and knit together the sleeves (purple lines). You will end up with the stitches for torso. Now work in the round. Later remove the waste yarn and place the stitches on the needle: the finnishing of the neck opening will be simple. If you want a big colalr, you can knit a tube.

One may ask what stitch patterns to choose. For the beginning, you can take some vertical patterns, whereas the pattern repeat should not be too wide. Happy holidays to everybody and a lot of pleasant knitting, of course! Here is a new beginning. The right colour is much more intensive red than it shows in the picture.

Ravelrys on küsitud halli sviitri õpetust. Mõtlesin, et parem teen oma lemmiklõngast (Aade Lõng 8/2), kuna tekstuur ja langevus on siis suurepärane. Plaan on kududa tuunika või kleit. On Ravelry I was asked to write up a pattern for the grey sweater. I thought I would rather make it from my favourite yarn (Aade Lõng 8/2) because the texture and the falling of the fabric are wonderful in this case. I plan to knit a tunic or a dress. If one wants a sweater, you can just bind of earlier. I will write a pattern based on the present yarn. Thus, it will be a minimalist plain knit that is easily ajustable for different sizes.

I have never been thinking like this: the winter is coming, I should knit something really warm. Some people have expressed their surprise when I knit mohair in the middle of the summer. I knit what is to my liking at the present moment. So, preparing for winter, I made this cotton jacket.

There are no buttons; recently, I became fond of jackets without buttons. But it can be worn with a pin or a brooch.

The winter is coming althought the weather is rather mild for December. These white flakes are snowflakes. In the proximity of the Townhall it did not matter but without its protecting roof Kristiina had to manage the shoot so that the snowflakes would not interfere!

Minu käest on küsitud, kas teen jaki allosas ka ripsiribasid, nagu varrukatel. Teen ikka! Kavatsen kududa veel 2-3 cm ja siis teengi.
I have been asked whether I am going to knit the garter stripes in the bottom part of the jacket as I did for the sleeves. Yes, I am! I intend to knot 2-3 cm more and then will do it.

Veel üks asi. Kuna on huvi halli sviitri vastu ja kuna avaldasin ise mõtet, et kude oleks palju ilusam, kui lõng oleks nt Aade Lõng 8/2, kavatsengi nüüd kududa teise versiooni sama kalkulatsiooniga.

One thing more. As there is some interest towards the grey swater and as I have expressed the idea that the texture would be much nicer in Aade Lõng 8/2 wool, I am going to knit another version with the mentioned yarn using the same calculations.

I have finished the sleeves without really noticing the whole thing. The cotton yarn is good for textured patterns, so the edges have garter ribs (the picture has been taken right now in the evening and, therefore, the colours are completely wrong).

Näitan uut sviitrit. Esialgu plaanisin, et 5 pahempidist silmust vahelduvad 1 paremidisega. Nii näitasingi oma poolikut tööd varasemates postitustes. Siiski nägin, et selle lõngaga ei ole pahempidine pind eriti kena. Siis ütles tütar: aga nn pahupool on hoopis ilusam ja küllap tal oli õigus. Kuna kudum on ilma õmblusteta, siis polegi probleemi, keera nii, nagu tahad!

I am showing the new sweater. At first I planned that pattern is p5, k1. This is what I demonstrated in previous posts. However, I saw that reversed stockinette does not look nice in this yarn. Then my daughter said that so-called wrogn side is much better and she was right after all. While the garment has no seams, no problem there, just turn and wear as you like!

Pronksi pood on uues kohas, Müürivahe 32. Kui hästi läheb, siis homsest hakkab tööle, aga kui on tõesti lõnga vaja, siis saab osta ka praegu. Kui jõudsin sinna, Urve (vasakul) ja Anu (paremal) olid juba tööhoos. Riiulid on enam-vähem paigutatud, nüüd tuleb kottidest lõngad välja võtta ja otsustada, mida kuhu panna.

The Pronksi yarn shop has moved to the new location, Müürivahe 32. If everything goes fine, then tomorrow it will be open but if you really need some yarn, you can buy it right now. When I arrived, Urve (left) and Anu (right) had been already working for a while. The shelves are now more or less in their places and now it is time to take the yarns from the bags and to decide where to place them.

Sain muuhulgas tegelda mohääriga. Minu meelest valgus langeb kenasti ja on näha värvide rohkust ja lõnga ilu.

Among other things, I got a chance to deal with mohair. I think the light falls beautifully and one can see the diversity of colours and the beauty of mohair.

Mitte enam toru/Not a tube anymore

Kurdan jälle, et peaaegu pole aega, millal saab pilistada. Näitan, mida olen vahepeal teinud. Nüüd pole enam pelk toru, jõudsin taljeni.

Again, I am complaining that there is no time to take pictures. Here is what I have done so far. Now it is not a plain tube anymore, I've reached the waist line.

Värv on mu lemmik, see oligi lõnga ostmisel otsustav. Tegelikult meeldis mulle ka see, et tegemist on villase lõngaga.

The colour is my favourite and this was decisive when I bought the yarn. In fact, I like that it is pure wool, too.

Raasiku vabriku lõng on minu meelest parem, kude on ühtlasem. See lõng (Elotroi Liisu) on aga pisut pehmem, aga olen kareduse suhtes immunne ja seega pole see nii oluline. Aga ma ei saa mööda minna ilusast hallist toonist! Lõnga oli selles tokis 136 g ja niipalju on veel järel! Veel üks pisut väiksem tokk ootab.
In my opinion, yarns produced by the Raasiku factory (Aade Lõng) are better, the texture is more even. This one (Elotroi Liisu) is a bit softer; as I am inidferent to coarseness, this is not terribly important. But I just cannot walk away from a beautiful shade of gray! Initially, there was 136 g of yarn in the ball and there is still quite a lot! One more ball, a bit smaller, is waiting, too.

Avantüür/An adventure

Need, kes tunnevad mind, teavad, et olen avantürismist väga kauge inimene. Kuid paistab, et kudumises võin laskuda avantüüridesse. See on täielik avantüür, valmis 3 päevaga. Esialgu arvasin, et ei õnnestu, aga igal juhul kavatsesin siin kirjutada, et teisi hoiatada. Aga õnnestus! Kristiina oli lahkelt valmis pildistama. Õnneks on ilm mahe ja saab pildistada väljas.

Those who know me, know well that I am very far from taking risks and going for adventures. However, it appears, that it is different as far as knitting is concerned. This was a complete adventure, finished in 3 days. In the beginning I thought it would not work out but was goint to post anyway to worn others. But it worked! Kristiina was kind to immediately take pictures. Fortunately, the weather is mild and one can take pictures outside.

Nüüd pisut tehnilist infot. Alustasin abilõngaga keskelt ja kudusin põiki. Esialgu on rida päris pikk, sest koepind algab selja alumises osas, läheb üle õla ja ette. Märkisin rea keskele õla joone ja tegin kahandusi. Pärast jätkasin sümmeetriliselt teises suunas. Proovisin aeg-ajalt selga. Kui kudum oli piisavalt lai, kudusin maha 3 vardaga küljed ja tegin väiksed varrukad (4-5 rida). Siis võtsin abilõngad välja ja töötlesin kaeluse. All korjasin silmused üles ja kudusin mõnevõrra alla. Miinuseks on muidugi pikk rida. Plussiks on ilus õlajoon ja päris hea V-kaelus. Konstruktsioonil on potentsiaali.

Now some technical information. I started with a provisional cast on from the centre and knitted sideways. At first rows were quite long because the row starts in the bottom of the back and goes accros the sholder to the front. I placed a marker in the middle of the row to mark the sholder line and made decreases. Then I did the other half as a mirror immage. Tried on several times. When the knit was broad enough, I made 3 needle bind off at the sides and then did small sleeves (4-5 rows). Then I removed provisional cast on from the collar and made the finnishing. Last, I picked up stitches in the bottom and knitted in rounds for some time. The negative aspect are long rows, of course. The positive one is a nice shoulder line and a rather fine-shaped V-neck. The construction has a potential.

A small overview. It happens often in Vilnius that second hand stores have some yarn. I was passing by and took the picture.

Mulle meeldib ajakiri Rebecca. Eestis pole seda näinud, aga siin saab osta ühest kohalikust suurpoest. Seal on palju mohäärikudumeid, aga mitte ainult.

I appreciate very much Rebecca magazine. I have not seen it in Estonia but here a big supermarket has it on news stand. There are a lot of mohair knits but not only that.

The combination of yarns in the shawl is somewhat unuseal. The darker parts are from tweed (some Rowan stuff) and the ligher ones are from Lithuanian linen. What a splendid idea!

Lõng on mõnus ja kudumine edeneb. Nüüd on mul varrukad valmis. Kui see pole just kimono-, raglaan- või ümmargusest passest eraldatav varrukas, siis on tihti nii, et see võib mõjutada kudumi pikkust (s.o. varrukas tõstab kogu asja pisut üles). Sellepärast teen nii: koon kere osa umbes taljeni ja teen varrukad valmis. Teoreetiliselt võib mõjutada ka krae, aga minu arust mitte nii oluliselt. Sallkrae, mida kavatsen siiagi kududa, minu teada ei avalda üldpikkusele mõju.

The yarn is pleasant and my knitting is progressing. Now I have both sleeves. If it is not a kimono, raglan nor a sleeve growing out of the round yoke, very often it can affect the general length of a garment (that is, sleeves raise the whole thing a little bit). That is why I usually do the following: I knit the torso part approximately to the waist and then knit the sleeves. Theoretically, a collar may have some influence as well but not very dramatically. A shawl collar that I am going to knit in this case, does not affect the general length.

Siin on varruka muster. Here is the stitch pattern for the sleeves. I did some calculations and realized that the pattern repeat of the main stitch is rather broad and maybe it would be counterintuitive to overdo it (distinguished readers know that, on the one hand, I am drawn to lace stitch patterns and, on the other, to minimalism, trying to balance between the two; maybe it is worth a special post). But there is already a small stitch pattern on the side and, apparently, it goes well together with the main pattern; thus, I decided to repeat it here.

It is about a yarn discovery. Currently Karnaluks carries the yarn named Silvija. Only 2 colours, 70 % wool and 30 % silk, 50 g/150 m. At a very reasonable price. And here is a new beginning.

Siia sobivad suured pitsilised mustrid. Võtsin vardad 4,5 mm.
Large lace patterns are suitable for the yarn. I am using needles 4.5 mm.

Ootamatu/Unexpected

Ootasin, et lõngast tuleks välja väike kimono varrukaga sviiter, aga ootamatult tuli tuunika! Metraaži poolest oli mohääri rohkem (3 tokki e. 750 m), meriinot vähem (2 tokki e. 700 m). Sellepärast orienteerusin meriino järgi. Kasutasin ära peaaegu kogu meriino. Peaaegu, kuna mustrikord on päris kõrge ja kartsin, et võib-olla ei jätku. Kanda saab mitut moodi, mida pildid näitavadki.

I was expecting that it will be enough yarn to make a small kimono-sleeved sweater but quite unexpectedly I ended up with a tunic! Speaking of metrage, I had more mohair (3 balls or 750 m) and less merino (2 balls or 700 m). That is why merino was decisive. I used up almost all merino. Almost, because the pattern repeat is rather high and I was afraid it will not be enough to end it. The tunic is wearable in a variety of ways, as you can see in the pictures.

Uus kudum käsil. Mohäär + peenike meriino. Kimono varrukas, kudusin esimest korda. Tegelikult pole siin midagi keerulist, ka seda võib teha õmblusteta.

A new project started. Mohair + thin lace merino. Kimono-sleeve, I did this for the first time. In fact, there is nothing difficult here, you can do this in a seamless way as well.

Minu lõngad: Austermann Merino Lace, 25 g/250 m ja GGH Kid Melange, 25 g/250 m. Viimase ostsin suvel Vilniusest Casa Lana poest, kus mohääri valik on päris lai. Panin lõngd kokku ja olen rahul: nõnda on muster selgem.
Here are my yarns: Austermann Merino Lace, 25 g/250 m and GGH Kid Melange, 25 g/250 m. I bought the latter this summer in Vilnius at Casa Lana store that carries quite a wide range of mohair. I joined the yarns and I am glad I did: in this way the stitch pattern has a better definition.

The pictures are here now. The colour is more or less correct. A pleasant yarn, the pattern shows nicely. Still, one item for the future: so-called horizontal ribbing (1st row: k, 2nd row: p, 3rd row: p, 4th row: k) is quite fine but after moistening it becomes a little bit loose. So I see two options: another stitch or playing with short rows in the shoulders area.

Selgitan pisut oma uue kudumi tehnilisi üksikasju. Mõne kudumiga on nii, et selle tegemist juhib suuremal määral intuitsioon. I will explain a bit technical details of my new project. Some knits are guided by intution more than less. First, I tried several stitch patterns but at the same time realized that something minimalist is needed here. This is what I opted for finally. Second, I intented to do a wrap jacket as usual (if you are interested, you are welcome to look the tags "ürp/wrap" and/or "põiki/sideways"). I also thought about decreasing the front pieces in the bottom part. However, after having completed the back part, the armholes and prepared to knit further, I went up to the mirror, put the garment on and saw a new possibility. Please look at the back view so far, then I am going to the matter.

Here is a large picture. I started decreasing. The green lines are decrease lines. I evenly decreased body stitches, so to say, after the collar. The result is the present construction.

Vest on pisut lühike, aga ega ma sellepärast ei muretse . Suhtun sellesse kui eksperimenti. Veel teen väiksed varrukad, niipalju, kui lõnga jätkub (ja mul on järel 60 g). The vest is a little bit short but I am not upset. I take it as an experiment. I am going to knit small sleeves as much as I have yaran left (and there is 60 g remaining). Next time I would do the following: 1) a longer torso part 2) a more interesting stitch pattern for the collar, a cable or lace, whereas the body could be in some plain stitch 3) I would experiment with the decreases.

Now it is getting dark quite early and I did not manage to take pictures yesterday, although I intended to.

The sleeves are finished and I started the collar. Once the collar is finished, I will decide on the length. Once I mentioned that the sleeves and the collar lift a bit the whole thing, that is why I am leaving the torso part to be the last one.

Krae on alles algstaadiumis, sellepärast on vähe näha. Plaan on teha suur krae, vaatame, kas sobib.

Olgu kohe öeldud, et ma ei kirjuta siin ülevalt alla kudumise kõigist meetoditest, vaid mõnest, mille kohta on mult küsitud. So far a new project is drying (I will tell about it more in the nearest future), I am doing the promised technical post. Nõnda tekivad õlad, mida sümboliseerivad punased jooned. Kui õlg on valmis, siis muudame kasvatuste süsteemi. Paneme uued markerid 3-4 silmust enne kasvatusjoont ja ka järel. Need on uued orientiirid, mis tähistavad varruka ülemist osa. Nüüd koome markerini, libistame selle paremale vardale, kasvatame, koome järgmise marerini, kasvatame jms. Tekivad uued kasvatuse jooned (sinine joon). Varruka kasvatused on siin põhimõtteliselt sellised, nagu kirjeldab Barbara Walker (õigemini, üks tema meetoditest).

So the first picture is a schematic presentation of the contiguous method. For the sake of simplicity let us consider a sweater and not a cardigan that has an opening. We cast on stitches for the neck, join them to work in round, mark the beginning/end of the row and the middle. The marked stitches are the lines along which we will do increases. We are going to increase in every row (this is different from a classical raglan) before and after the line. In this way we will obtain the shoulders that are marked with red lines in the picture. When the shoulders are done, we change the system of increases. We shall place new markers 3-4 stitches before and 3-4 stitches after the increase line and by doing this we mark the cap of the sleeve. Now we knit to the marker, slip it, make an increase, work to the next marker and make an increase. We have new lines of increase, marked with blue. The sleeves in this method are knitted according to one of the principles described by Barbara Walker.

The second picture is familiar to my readers. I could not get a clear answer from fans of the contiguous method whether my modification still can be classified under this method or not. We start in the same way. But I make sleeves according to another principle. I make increases until the shoulder is completely covered or even a little more than that. Then I knit without increases for a while. Someone has asked what should be done if the upper arms are massive. I suggest you can make some evenly distributed increases in one or two rows. I knit until it is time to separate the sleeves. In the picture the stitches of the sleeves are on a waste yarn. Then I certainly cast on some stitches for underarms, join again and work in round downward.

Mõnikord on tõesti nii, et väike proovilapp ei anna täit ettekujutust mustrist. Kuigi muster on tuttav, ei osanud ma ette kujutada, et suurel pinnal on ta kohe väga kena. Kvantiteet muutub kvaliteediks.
Sometimes a small swatch does not give a whole picture about a stitch pattern. Although the pattern is familiar to me, I could not imagine that it is so nice on a bigger surface. Quantity turns into quality.

Täpsed andmed lõngakulu kohta saan öelda hiljem, siin on päris keeruline aritmeetika, sest lisaks poest ostetud mohäärile oli mul umbes pool kera. Nii et kui kaaluda mohääri jääk, lahutada see kogus poole kera 13 grammist, seejärel lisada 2 tokki (50 g) siis saan teada, palju mohääri mul kulus. Ja siis kaalun kogu jaki ja lahutan mohääri koguse, saab teada, palju villast läks.

I will be able to say only later how much yarn exactly was used, it will require a bit of calculation because in addition to the mohair I purchased I had approximately a half of ball at home. So when I weigh up the remaining mohair and deduct this amount from the 13 grams and add to this 2 balls (50 g), I will learn how much mohair I used. Vastu valgust pildistades tundub, justkui kudum oleks õhuline ja läbipaisteb, tegelikult ei ole (mohäär + tõsine villane lõng). Jõudsin umbes taljeni, nüüd kavatsen teha kasvatusi. Üks mohääritokk on peaaegu otsas. Ilmselt vajan üldkokkuvõttes 3 mohääri tokki.
While the picture is taken against the light, it seems as if the garment were airy and transparent but, in fact, it is not (mohair + a solid wool). I have almost reached the waist line and intend to do some increases. One mohair ball is almost used up. Apparently, I need 3 mohair balls all in all.

Mõtlesin teha ühtmoodi, tuli aga teha teistmoodi. Nimelt on mul tumehalli Aade 8/2, tahtsin kududa mustriga jaki, mõtlesin juba välja, mis konstruktsiooniga, jäin mustrit valima. Aga mõnkord on nii, et naturaalne (värvimata) lõng on ebaühtlane, kohati läheb peenikeseks jms. Mis siis ikka, mustriga jakk tuleb mõnest teisest lõngast. Aga et ebaühtlasele lõngale jõulisust lisada, panin hulka musta mohääri. Pind on just selline, et labane parempidine kude näeb hea välja.

I intended to do it in a certain way but eventually had to do it in another way. Namely, I have dark-gray Aade 8/2 wool and wanted to knit a jacket with a lace pattern; I already had a certain construction in mind and started picking a pattern. However, sometimes natural (that is, not dyed) wool is somewhat uneven, sometimes it is rather thin etc. Anyway, the jacket with a pattern I had in mind will be from another yarn. In order to give some definition to the uneven yarn, I added black mohair. The fabric is just right for stockinette to show nicely.

Konstruktsioonidest räägime teine kord. Minu käest on küsitud, kas mul on nüüd kõik contiguous-meetodiga, vastasin, et õigupoolest mitte midagi. On teatud modifikatsioon, mille kohta küsisin vastavas Ravelry rühmas, aga selget vastust ei saanud, kas too on contiguous või mitte. I will talk another time about different construction. I have been asked whether I am knitting now everything according to the contiguous method and I answered that, in fact, I have nothing in this technique. There is a certain modification about which I asked in the respective group on Ravelry but I never got a clear reply whether it is contiguous or not. Apparently, there is a certain interest towards constructions and I will write later on this topic.

Malahhiit/Malachite

Nüüd on valmis! Kuna selle värvi nimi on Malachite, polnud probleemi nimeandmisega Ravelrys. Läksime Avega Anu juurde Pronksi poodi, aga Anut polnud. Ave tegi minust paar traditsioonilist pilti.
It is finished! As this colourway has the name Malachite, I did not have to think twice about the project name on Ravelry. Together with Ave we went to the Pronksi shop but Anu was not there. Ave took a couple of traditional pictures.

Siiski kõige parem valgus on väljas. Õnneks pole nii väga külm, pealegi see õhuke jakk annab sooja, ikkagi meriino! Mõned pildid on sarnased, mul oli raske valida.

Still, the best light is outside. Fortunately, it is not so cold and, in addition, this thin cardi is warm, as it is merino wool! Some pictures are similar, I had difficulties with choice.

Kuna Mia pidi täna plaani järgi Tallinna tulema, et Ave ja minuga koos kududa, samas ei olnud kumbki neist varem Raasikul käinud, otsustasime, et käime ära. Meie seltsiga liitus Kristiina oma väikse poisiga. Pärast Kristiina poisiga läksid koju, meie kolmekesi istusime kohvikus, kudusime ja ajasime juttu. Mia tõi Avele ja mulle kingiks enda õmmeldud väiksed kotikesed, kus saab hoida vardaid jms. Tal endalgi on selline kotike kasutusel. Vabrikus aga ostsime sama värvi lõnga (omavahel kokku leppimata). Nii et pärast tuli selline pilt (lõnga õige värv on türkiis):
As Mia planned to come to Tallinn today in order to knit together with Ave and myself and both had never visited the Raasiku yarn factory, we decided to do the trip today. Kristiina with her little son joined us. Afterwards Kristiina and her boy went home and the remaining three went to a cafeteria to knit and to talk. Mia brought for Ave and me a small gift, a bag for needles etc that she had made herself. And she is currently using a similar bag. At the factory we independently bought the same colour. Kerele on kulunud peaaegu 1 tokk (100 g). Krae + nööbiliistud + varruka hakatis on juba teisest tokist, see on poole peal. Arvan, et kuna mul on veel 1 tokk, siis saan teha pikad varrukad.
I used up almost 1 ball (100 g) for the torso part. The collar + button bands + the start of the sleeve are already from the second ball that is approximately in the middle. As I have one more ball, I believe I can make long sleeves.

Now some theory, as promised in the title. First, in the beginning one may feel that the button bands should be rather wide, almost equal to the front in size. But after the stitches are picked up and you have at least a couple of rows, you don't thinks so anymore. Second, I was pondering on the stitch pattern (but of course!). Theoretically, I could have used garter stitch, since the bottom edge is already in garter. On the other hand, garter stitch has a more loose gauge compared to stockinette or a lace pattern based on stockinette. Which means that, if there is plenty of garter stitch, it may start stretching, especially the bottom edge. At the same time I did not want ribbing (you have probably noticed that I use it rather seldom) and no other lace pattern because in this case there would be too much of everything and, in my opinion, nothing can be worse than an overloaded knitwear or a garment in general. Simple eyelet patterns, alternation of garter and stockinette come to rescue. The fabric does not stretch, the gauge is not radically different and, at the same time, the whole thing is not too busy.

Eks siis peaks umbes 1,5 tokiga arvestama. Kusjuures rätik pole üldse väike, nn keskjoon on u 1 meeter pikk!

The yarn is rather hairy but after moistening and drying the hairiness decreases and the stitch pattern is quite well defined. I forgot to weigh up in the yarn store. I had an already started ball that I finished and then started a second one. That is, one should count on 1.5 ball approximately. And the shawl is not small at that, the so-called central line is approximately 1 m long!

Eile saabus Tallinna rühm soome kudujaid Katjaga eesotsas. Saime sadamas kokku ja sõitsime väikebussiga Raasikule. Reisimuljeid võib lugeda Katja blogist.
Yesterday a group of Finnish knitters, let by Katja, arrived at Tallinn. We met at the port and a minibus took us to Raasiku where Estonian Aade Lõng yarn is produced. You can read a travel account in Katja's blog.

See silt (kudujad) ehtis meie väikebussi. Et ei tekiks segadust. Aga kohale jõudes, nägime, et enne meid oli saabunud hoopis suur buss, ka soome kudujaid täis!

Our minibus was decorated with the sign (knitters). Just to avoid misunderstanding. But after having reached Raasiku we found this rather big buss that had arrived earlier, carrying Finnish knitters as well.

Ja nüüd uus kudum. Koon rätikut, mis on eelmisega sarnane. Lõng on erinev, Dropsi Vivaldi, paksem ja karvasem mohäär, aga üsna pehme. Rätiku konstruktsioon on sama, aga muster erinev. Tegelikult mõtlesingi nii, et mustrid ja lõngad on vastastikku asendatavad. Olen juba proovinud, lehemuster näeb Vivaldi lõngal päris kena, Kidsilk Haze aga sobib ka rombimustri jaoks.

And now a new project. I am knitting a shawl that is similar to the previous one. The yarn is different, Drops Vivaldi, a thicker and a more hairy mohair but still rather soft. The construction of the shawl is the same but the stitch pattern differs. Actually, I planned that the stitch patterns and the yarns are mutually substitutable. I have already tried, the leaf pattern looks rather nice in Vivaldi and the diamond pattern is suitable for Kidsilk Haze, too.

Rätik on valmis. Avele meeldib ja sobib selline värv ning ta nõustus lahkesti poseerima. Kodus pole mul kedagi, kellele värv sobiks, nii et modelliga vedas. Rätiku muster on lihtne, konstruktsioon on selline, et silmuste arv väheneb, lõng mõnus, ühesõnaga, koob ennast ise!

The shawl is finished. Ave likes the colour and it suits her well and she kindly agreed to model. I don't have anybody at home on whom this colour looks well, so I am lucky with the model. The stitch pattern is easy, the construction is such that the number of stitches decreases, the yarn is pleasant; to make it short, it knits itself up!

It was a lovely meeting and knitting together yesterday: Mia and Helena came from Helsinki to Tallinn and Ave joined us as well. We had time to visit yarnshops and to knit together. And now something new. Maybe some of you know about the Lõngamaania internet yarn shop. I am hopeful that soon a "real" yarn store will follow. Yesterday I knitted rather intensively. When I decided to take a picture, it had already become quite dark. Then I decided I would photograph the finished thing. Now it is drying.

Juba mainisin mõnele kudujale ja ka kodusetele, et see kudum on tõepoolest probleemivaba. Ei mingit harutamist, kõik klapib. Tõsi küll, disaini mõttes pole siin midagi erilist, tehniliselt on kõik lihtne ja läbi proovitud. Olen väga rahul mustriga.
I mentioned to several knitters and to my family as well that this knit is really unproblematic. No ripping, everything fits together. It is true that from the point of view of design there is nothing special and technically everything is easy and done many times. I am very fond of the stitch pattern.

Avastasin täna, et ka pahupool pole paha. Kui vähendada parempidiste silmuste riba, siis on see kahepoolne muster, võib sobida rätikule.
Today I discovered that the wrong side is not bad at all. If the knit stitch sections are narrower, then it is a double-sided pattern that is suitable for a shawl.

Eelmise kudumiga oli nii, et oli väga huvitav, uudne jms, aga hõlmad tegin ümber 4 korda. Mõni kudum on jällegi probleemivaba, nagu praegune. Muudkui kood, kõik tuleb välja nagu iseenesest.
The previous project was most interesting, with a new construction etc but I had to re-knit the front pieces 4 times. Some knits are, nevertheless, unproblematic, like the current one. You just knit away, everything comes as if by itself.

Lähipilt. Mõtlesin, mis mustrit kasutada krae ja nn nööbiliistudele. Kartsin, et tavaline ripskude on ilus, aga võib välja venida. Riskisin muidugi sellega, et on liiga palju erinevaid mustreid, kuid tulemus on viisakas.
A close view. I was pondering what stitch pattern should be used for the collar and so-called button bands. I was afraid that plain garter stitch is beautiful but can be too stretchy. Of course I was risking ending up with too many diverse stitches but the result is decent.

Oli mure ka lõnga pärast, et kas jätkub. Kerele ja kraele kulus peaaegu 4 tokki. Nüüd võin rahulikult varrukad kududa, kuna mul on veel 2 tokki.
There was a concern about the yarn, whether I have enough. Almost 4 balls was used for the torso and the collar. Now I can knit the sleeves without any worries, as there are 2 more balls.

I will show you a new beginning. I started this day before yesterday in the evening. The yarn is Lana Grossa Mano, 50 g/150 m, 90 % cotton, 10 % polyamide. It is very pleasant and, as they say, knits itself up. I have 6 balls of the yarn and hope it will be enough for a vest with a shawl collar. There are supposed to be short sleeves.

Eest on praegu küllalt vähe näidata, sest krae + nööbiliistud tulevad hiljem.
It is not a lot to show of the front because the collar + button bands will come later.

Ja muster eraldi. Mulle meeldib ripsi ja mustri kombinatsioon.

Väljas on torm, ei taha kodunt välja minna, seetõttu vaid selline pilt. Loodetavasti saan homme juba õige fotograafiga kokku. Nagu näha, olen üht-teist ümber teinud. Nimelt kogunes kaeluse juurde liiga palju n-ö kangast, kõik lotendas. Siis mõtlesin välja, kuidas seda vältida, kudusin hõlmad uuesti. Konstruktsiooni tuli muudatus, sain loodetavasti targemaks.
It is a big storm outside now and I don't want to leave home, that is why this is the only picture for the time being. Hopefully, tomorrow I will be able to get together with a proper photographer. As you can see, I've changed several things. Namely, there was an excessive fabric around the neck. Then I invented how this can be avoided and re-knitted both front pieces. The construction was changed and hopefully I am wiser now.

Yesterday I pondered and decided that the sleeves are obligatory. Otherwise the lower part is too busy (diagonals, drape etc) and it should be balanced with something. I am not yet sure, maybe the bottom is really too overloaded but we shall see in the end.

Paar päeva tagasi nägin Tallinna Ülikooli Akadeemilises Raamatukogus vanade raamatute ja ajakirjate müüki. Ei tea, miks neid asju ei taheta enam alles hoida. Nägin ajakirja "Eesti Naine" 1935.a. komplekti ja jäin vaatama. Teatavasti meeldib mulle 1920-ndate-1930-ndate mood ja olen alati valmis vastavaid pilte vaatama.
A couple of days ago I came across a sale of old books and magazines at Tallinn University Academic Library. I do not know why these things are not wanted anymore. I noticed the 1935 issue of the magazine "Eesti Naine" (Estonian Woman) and stopped to have a look. As you know, I like the 1920s-1930s fashion and am always eager to see pictures of that period.

Vahepeal polnud aega kirjutada, hea, et kududa jõudsin! Alustasin eile varrukat ja nüüd näitan, mis on olemas.
Meanwhile I had no time to write, I am glad I had some time to knit! Yesterday I starte one sleeve and now you can observe what has been done up to this point.

Siin on üldvaade. Praeguseks on kulunud täpselt 4 tokki (50 g/100 m). Varrukat alustasin uuest tokist. Arvatavasti kulub mõlemale varrukale kokku pisut rohkem kui 2 tokki. Siis saab otsustada pikkuse üle.
Here is a general view. As of now exactly 4 balls (50 g/100 m) have been used up. I started the sleeve with a new ball of yarn. Probably, for both sleeves I will need slightly more than 2 balls. Then it will be possible to determine the length.

A new work in progress. My daughter ordered a jacket. She wants something with a good draping quality, smooth and very simple. Still, we agreed that it will not be plain stockinette from top to bottom. So there will be some simple lace pattern in the bottom. The yarn is a cotton-polyamide blend, lovely to work with, good drape.

The picture is unclear not in the straight sense, that is, it is not like the photo is blurred but looking at the picture you have no idea what is going on.

Nõnda on, sest krae on veel üsna väike. Kui ta on suurem, on selgem.
This is because the collar is too little yet. When it will have grown bigger, it will be more clear.

Krae on kahekordsest mustast mohäärist. Tegelikult on kontrast halli sviitri ja musta krae vahel pisut suurem.
The collar is from a black mohair, held double. In reality the contrast between the grey sweater and the black collar is a little bigger.

Yesterday the knitting club meeting took place in the store, the last one for me this summer. Hopefully, next summer I will be able to post knitting club pictures again. Thanks to all of you!

Nüüd sellest, mis on töös. Alustasin juba pühapäeval, kuid pole siiamaani jõudnud postitada. Selline oli seis üleeile.
Now about the current project. I started already on Sunday but have had no opportunity to write a post about it. This is how it looked like the day before yesterday.

Lõng on Dropsi alpaka. Esialgu plaanis oli see rätik, kuid alpaka on niisuguse mustri jaoks liiga pehme, pealegi tumehall värv sõi kogu mustri ära. Nii et rätik sai tehtud Drops Fabelist. Mõtlesin siis, mida teha alpakast ja mõtlesin välja. Nagu näete, on see lihtne sviiter. Kuid veel tuleb kaelus ja varrukate ääred teisest lõngast.

The yarn is Drops alpaca. At first the yarn was intended for this shawlette but alpaca is too soft for such a stitch pattern, and dark grey ate up the pattern entirely. Thus, I used Drops Fabel for the shawlette. I've been thinking what to knit with the aplaca and got an idea. As you see, it is a simple sweater. There will be a collar and sleeve edges from another yarn though.

Dear readers, thank you for your comments! The knit is really easy in the technical sense. Several Ravelry knitters have asked me to write the pattern but it is reserved for the Käsitöö magazine. Still, it is possible to explain knitting principles. As the surface is rather large, you can choose stitch patterns you like.

Tavaliselt on ürp lihtsalt ristkülik aukudega/varrukatega. Parema istuvuse jaoks võib aga teha enam-vähem tavalised käeaugud. Minu hiljutine kudum on kootud põiki selja keskjoonelt hõlmade suunas, kuigi võib alustada hõlmast. Oletame, et koon selja keskelt ja olen jõudnud käeaugu jooneni. Siis teen nii: jätan ootele krae silmused (sinine joon), koon läbi käeaugu ääre silmused ja panen abilõngale (juhul, kui tulevad varrukad; kui ei, siis võib lihtsalt maha kududa), seda tähistab punane jämedam joon. Seejärel koon läbi ülejäänud silmused (must joon). Pärast moodustan n-ö külje: koon edasi-tagasi mõned sentimeetrid kudumi alumisest äärest kuni käeauguni (väike must ristkülik). Usually a wrap jacket is a rectangular with slits/sleeves. For a better fitting you can knit more or less usual armholes. My recent knit was started sideways from the center of the back piece in the direction of the front pieces but you can start from a front piece, of course. Suppose I started as I started in this case and have reached the place of an armhole. Then I do the following: put the collar stitches on wait (blue line), knit the stitches of the armhole and put them on a scrap yarn (if there are no sleeves, these stitches can be bound off). This is represented by a thicker red line. Then the side is formed: I knit back and forth a couple of centimetres from the lower edge to the armhole (small black rectangle). Then I cast on as many stitches for the second edge of the armhole as I have on the scrap yarn/bound off. If sleeves are planned, then I cast on with a scrap yarn, if not, then with the main yarn. Then I knit the stitches of the collar that have been waiting. The red triangle refers to the armhole.

Lõng on muidugi suhteliselt peenike. See on pitsisalli lõng, kuigi, nagu näha, pole selline ürp üldse välistatud. Lõng on üsna kerge. Aade Lõng (8/1 ehk ligikaudu samast klassist) ja küllap leedu oma Teksrena on raskem. Aga kuna kodus on ahjuküte (kui on külm, kütan, kui ei, siis mitte) ja tööl on üsna palav, siis selline kergem kudum on sügiseks täitsa paras.

Of course, the yarn is relatively thin. It is suitable for lace scarves but, as you can see, this kind of wrap jacket is not impossible at all. The yarn is rather light. Aade Lõng (8/1, which is approximately the same yardage) and, for sure, Lithuanian Teksrena are heavier. But as I have a stove at home (if it is cold, I make fire, if not, then not) and it is rather hot at work, this kind of light knitwear is exactly what you need for autumn.

Today quite a lot of people came to the knitting club.

Nagu näha, toimusid konsultatsioonid ja arutelud. Antud juhul arutasime, kuidas alt-üles kudumist teha ülevalt-alla kudum.
As you can see, there were consultations and discussions. In this particular case we discussed how a certain bottom up pattern could be turned into a topdown one.

Alustasin täna varrukat. Rasa oli pildistanud veel enne seda, kui teised kohale jõudsid ja sain kootud mitu mustrikorda. Praegu jõudsin küünarnukini, õnneks pole käeauk liiga suur.
Today I started the sleeve. Rasa had taken this picture before others arrived and before I knitted a couple of pattern repeats. As of now, I got to the elbow level and, fortunately, the armhole is not too big.

Kere valmis/The torso finished

Kere on valmis. Proovisin selga, olen päris rahul. Nüüd on varrukate kord. Peaks vaatama, kas käeauk ei ole siiski liiga avar. Äärmisel juhul võib olla ka ilma varrukateta. See selgub lähiajal.
The torso is finished. I tried on and I like it. Now it is time for the sleeves. I need to see though whether the armhole is not too large. In the exterme case it can be a wrap without sleeves. It will be clear in the nearest future.

Üks hõlm/One fornt piece

Ei jõudnud eile kirjutada, teen nüüd kiire ülevaate. Siin on üks hõlm, peaaegu valmis.
I did not had time to write yesterday and make a quick overview now. Here is one front piece, almost finished.

Siit võib näha, et olemas on seljatükk ja hõlm, teisest hõlmast on kootud 1 mustrikord.
Here one can see the back piece and the front pice; the second front piece has only 1 pattern repeat.

Kudumine läheb aeglaselt, kuigi muster on kena ja lõng meeldib mulle endiselt. Loodan siiski, et saan varsti teise hõlma valmis, siis saab mõelda varrukatest. Muide, esimene tokk polegi veel otsas!
The knitting progresses slowly, although the stitch pattern is lovely and I like the yarn as I liked in the beginning. Still, I hope to complete the second front piece soon in order to start thinking about the sleeves. By the way, I still have not finished the first ball of yarn!

Eile, nagu plaanitud, rääkisin Mezgimo zona poes kohalikele kudujatele sellest, kuidas koon ülevalt alla õmblusteta. Kõik olid väga kenad, mõned panid kirja, küsiti palju. Sonata oli teinud mulle tõesti ilusa reklaami. Muidugi pidi juhtuma nii, et just eile olin unustanud fotoka koju. Õnneks Audronė ja Daiva olid ettenägelikud ja tegid pilte. Aitäh!
As planned, yesterday I gave a talk in the Mezgimo zona shop to local knitters about knitting topdown and seamless. Everybody was very kind, some took notes, there was a lot of questions. Sonata had made a really fine advertising job. Of course it had to happen that yesterday I had left my camera at home. Fortunately, Audronė and Daiva had been thoughtful enough and took pictures. Thank you!

Jutt on tõesti lühike: näitan, mis seisus on kudum. Jõudsin teha ühe käeaugu ja jätkan esitükiga. Mingil hetkel teen ka teise käeaugu, siis saab selga proovida. Edasi peaks olema juba lihtne.

This is a really short update: I am demosntrating how far the project is. I have done one armhole and go on with a front piece. At some point I will do the second one and then it will be possible to try it on. The further knitting is rather straightforward.

Laupäeval käisin Siūlų oazė poes, millest kirjutasin kunagi varem. Seal müüakse leedu villast lõnga, millest kirjutasin samas postituses. Seekord oli leedu villast suhteliselt vähe, oodatakse uut kaupa. Minu tähelepanu köitis aga Roma-nimeline lõng, villane, 100 g/750 m.
On Saturday I went to Siūlų oazė yarn shop that I had discribed earlier. They offer Lithuanian wool that I referred to in that post. This time there was relatively little Lithuanian wool, they are expecting a new lot to arrive soon. The yarn named Roma attracted my attention, it is wool 100g /750 m.

Tahtsin suhteliselt peenikest lõnga, aga siin oli otsustav värv. Nimelt oli mul selline ürp, mis hakkas kellelegi meeldima ja mille kinkisin ära. Nüüd arvasin, et võiks kududa uue, ainult pisut teistmoodi.
I wanted a relatvely thin yarn but in this case the colour was decisive. Namely, I had this wrap that someone liked and I gave it as a gift to that person. Now I thought that I can knit a new one but in a slightly different way.

Mulle tõesti meeldib see lõng. Peenike, aga koon 3 mm vardaga. Ei ole kare, samas püsib vormis. Proovilapp ei veninud ega tõmbunud kokku. Austatud lugejad teavad, et mulle meeldivad n-ö iseloomuga lõngad, mitte ülearu pehmed. Pitsimuster on ilusti nähtav. Värvikaart on suhteliselt viisakas, võib-olla leidub seal veel midagi.
I really like this yarn. It is thin but I knit on 3 mm needles. It is not coarse and at the same time the fabric stays in shape. The swatch did not stretch neither contracted. Honourable readers know that I like yarns with character, so to say, that is, not very soft ones. The stitch pattern has a good definition. The colour choice is relatively decent, maybe I will find something else.

Värv on pigem selline, nagu alumisel fotol. Tegelikult on aga veel rohekam.
The colour is more true in the lower picture. Actually, it is even more greenish.

Vilniuse vest/Vilnius vest

Lubage esitleda, Vilniuse vest! Paremat nime ei tulnud pähe. Aga kuna lõng on Vilniusest ja valmis kootud sai ka Vilniuses ja mõeldud on just Vilniuse suve jaoks, siis miks ka mitte.
Please allow to introduce, Vilnius vest! I could not come up with a better name. While the yarn was purchased in Vilnius and the vest was completed in Vilnius as well and the garment is meant for Vilnius summers, why not!

Kuna päike paistab, pole eriti hea pildistada. Midagi saime ikka.
As the sun is shining, it is not very helpful for taking pictures. But we got something.

Eile oli kudum nii pikk, täna on juba valmis ja kuivab. Loodetavasti saan näidata lähiajal.
Yesterday my knit was this long, today it is finished and drying now. Hopefully, I will be able to show it in the nearest futures.

Eile oli Mezgimo zona lõngapoes kudujate kokkutulek, tavaline neljapäevane üritus. Sain näha vanu tuttavaid, oli päris hea üle hulga aja kokku saada. Sonata pildistas lahkesti.
Yesterday there was a regular Thursday meeting of knitters in the Mezgimo zona shope. I saw old friends and it was very pleasant to meet after such a long break. Sonata was very kind to take pictures.

Lähedal asub veel üks lõngapood. Selle nimi on Casa Lana/Siūlų namai (Lõngamaja), aadress Basanavičiaus 1. Müüakse palju peenikest mohääri (GGH, OnLine), mitmesugust puuvillast (OnLine), viskoosi-puuvilla segu (ka OnLine), mitmesugust meriinot (BBB, OnLine jne), villast, mingil määral linast jms. Müüjad on hästi sõbralikud ja seletavad üsna lahkesti. Ise koovad ja kannavad oma kudumeid. Mingi info on siin, aga ainult leedu keeles.

There is one more yarn shop nearby. Its name is Casa Lana/Siūlų namai (Hous of Yarn), the address is Basanavičiaus 1. There is quite a lot of thin mohair on sale (GGH, OnLine), several kinds of cotton (OnLine), rayon-cotton blend (by OnLine as well), various weights of merino (BBB, OnLine etc), wool, some linen etc. The salespersons are quite frendly and kindly give advice. They knit and wear their knitwear. There is some information here but in Lithuanian only.

Ja lõpuks kuulutus. Mind paluti rääkida pikemalt, kuidas kududa ülevalt alla ilma õmblusteta. Nii et järgmisel neljapäeval (04.08) kl 17 Mezgimo zona poes jagan seletusi. Arvan, et mul on selleks ajaks mõni kudum alustatud, nii et võin täpselt kirjeldada töö käiku.

And finally an announcement. I was asked to explain in more details how to knit top-down without seams. So I will do that next Thursday (04.08) at 5 p.m. in Mezgimo zona. I think I will have started something and will be able to describe with a greater precision what I do.

Nagu öeldakse, mitte mingeid rabavaid uudiseid. Koon edasi. Võib-olla olen juba sel suvel kudunud üsna palju linast, seetõttu see kudum tundub igavavõitu, kuigi midagi pole valesti.
As they say, nothing to write home about. I keep on knitting. Maybe I have already knitted a lot of linen this summer and this is why this knit seems a little bit dull, although nothing is wrong.

Jälle linane/Linen again

Mezgimo zona poe perenaine Sonata pakkus täna, et võiks teha paar pilti uue kudumi algusest. Kuid pärast üht pilti sai aku tühjaks.
Sonata, the owner of Mezgimo zona yarn shop, suggested today to take some pictures of the initial stage of a new knitting project. After a single shot the battery was empty.

Pole midagi, nagunii ei ole veel palju jõudnud teha. Nimelt murdsin tükka aega pead, mis muster sobiks ja kuidagi ükski muster ei istunud. Otsustasin väga lihtsa lahenduse kasuks.
No problem, in any case not much has been done. Namely, I have spend a lot of time pondering over a suitable stitch pattern and did not like anything. I opted for a very easy solution.

Tuleb lihtne linane jakike, pealeviskamisasi, nagu öeldakse. Seekord koon 2,5 mm vardaga ja tundub päris hea.
It will be a simple linen jacket, a thing to throw on, as they say. This time I am using 2.5 mm needles and the fabric feels quite right.

Paar sõna lõngast. Suurepärane lõng! On pehme (minu jaoks pole see peamine, aga küllap on palju tundlikke inimesi), samas püsib vormis. Muster on ilusti nähtav. See on küll oluline, sest mulle meeldivad tumedad värvid ja ühtlasi igasugu pitsimustrid. Metraaž on väga hea. Värvikaart on päris viisakas: kirjude lõngade austajatele on päris mitu varianti, samuti minu jaoks on sobiv punane, lilla, must ja rohekas-sinine. Ametlikult sokilõng, tegelikult on rätiku, aga ka kleidi, jaki jms lõng.
Some words about the yarn. Wonderful! It is soft (not terribly important for me but there are a lot of sensitive people), at the same time it stays in shape. The stitch pattern has a great definition. It is relevant because I like dark colours and also all kind of lace patterns. The yardage is very nice. The colour card is rather decent: for fans of multicoloured yarns there are quite a few options and for me as well: red, purple, black and greenish blue. Officially it is sock yarn but really it is shawl, dress, cardigan etc yarn.
