Käisin täna Veimevaka lõngapoes. Tavaliselt sattun sinna harva, kuna see asub kesklinnast kaugemal. Muuhulgas müüakase seal lõngavärve. Päivi, se on sinulle!
Today I went to Veimevakk yarnshop. Usually I go there rather infrequently because it is situated away from the centre. Among other things they sell yarn dye.
Siin on värvikaart:
Here is the colour card:
Värv on sellistes kotikestes, hind on 16 kr kott.
They are sold in such bags, 16 EEK for a bag.
Nagu oligi karta, vajasin kähku midagi mohäärist. Mul on 1 tokk ilusat Camelot Lineapiu lõnga (50 g /500 m), Katyusha saatis kunagi sügisel. Värv on tegelikult veel tumedam. Sellest tuleb pitsimustriga top, ilmselt üks kiirkudum.
As you must have feared I needed something from mohair quickly. I have 1 skein of a beautiful Cmelot Lineapiu (50/500 m) that Katyusha sent me this autumn. Actually, the colour is darker. This will be a lace top, probably a quick knit.

Kollane/Yellow
Nüüdisaja pilditöötlemisprogrammid lubavad igasuguseid asju teha, nii et igaüks saab piltidega mängida, miks mitte teha mustvalgeks:
Nowadays image software allows doing all kind of tricks with pictures so that anyone can play, why not trying black and white:
Tegelik värv on muidugi kollane. Piltidele jääb enam-vähem õigesti.
Of course the real colour is yellos. It can be captured more or less right.
Siin on taustaks minu lemmikud: peenvillased pitsilõngad!
Here in the background there are my favourites: laceweigh wool for lace knitting!
This picture was taken in another place, we decided that cotton yarns should be in the background.

Jätkub/Progressing
Jätkan, paistab, et asi hakkab ilmet võtma. Siin näeb keskmist mustrit. Muide, juba kaks võrdlemisi kudumiskauget inimest on nimetanud seda palmikuks, kuigi tehniliselt pole see mingi palmik. Järjekordne kinnitus, et on olemas n-ö pseudopalmikute mustripere.
I am proceeding, the whole thing starts taking shape. Here you can see the central stitch pattern. By the way, already two more or less knitting-far persons have called this a cable, although technically this is clearly not a cable. Another confirmation that there is a pattern family loosely classifiable as mock cables.
In order to be sure where I am with my work, I compared it with a blouse. I am going to finish the current pattern repeat and to devide the knitting into the front and back parts.

Veel nippe/more tricks
Why the work is on such a short needle that nothing can be seen?
See on jälle üks nipp. Millegipärast isegi metallvardal ei libise see lõng sugugi hästi, pean kogu aeg lükkama jne. Siis mõtlesin välja, et lühem varras võiks olla asjalikum, niiviisi libisevad silmad ise varda otsa poole!
This is yet another trick. For some reason this yarn does not slip well even on metal needles and I have to push the stitches towards the tip of the needle all the time. Then I decided that a shorter needle may be more efficient, in this way the stitches slip by themselves towards the tip of the needle!
It is highly possible that all this is known for ages and I am inventing the weel here. Still, today I heard from a knitter with whom I exchanged opinions that many dislike short circular needles. So this is the matter of taste, as almost everything in the world.
Kootud on niipalju, umbes kolmandik kere osast. Loodetavasti läheb nüüd kiiremini.
Here is what I have up to now, approximately one third of the torso. Hopefully, it will go faster now.

Väikseid nippe ja huvitavaid lõngu/Some tricks and interesting yarns
Kudumises on vaja insenerimõtlemist. Selles pole midagi uut. Samuti pole midagi uut selles, et laiskus on progressi mootor. Alustasin nimelt tellimistööd, on vaja disainida puuvullasest lõngast suvetop. Puuvill (vähemalt puhas puuvill) pole vist minu materjal. Mida teha? Leiutasin sellise triki:
One needs a bit of engineer thinking in knitting. Nothing new here. Also nothing new in the idea that laziness is the engine of progress. Namely, I started an order, I was asked to design a summer top from cotton. Cotton (at least pure cotton) is probably not my kind of yarn. I had all kind of thoughts and tried to start several times. The question is how, on the one hand, avoid seaming and, on the other, avoid casting on many stitches because it is not exactly my idea of fun. I am not a dogmatic and I do not claim that avoiding seams is the goal; however, I imagined myself knitting the front and the back part separatly and seaming them together with this somewhat coarse yarn; the imagined picture was not attractive. What shall be done then? I invented the following trick:
Külgedel on lõhikud. Seega: loo esitüki silmad, koo mõnda aega eraldi, loo tagatüki silmad, koo sama hulk ridu eraldi, siis ühenda ja koo ringselt!
There are splits at the sides. Thus: CO front part stitches, knit some rows, CO back part stitches, knit the same number of rows, then join and knit in rounds!
Midagi väga põnevat ega keerulist pole. Keskel tuleb "vausabakirja" variatsioon:
Nothing very fancy or difficult. In the middle there is a variation of "vausabakiri" stitch pattern:
Nüüd midagi huvitavamat. Käisin Pronksi poes. Anu oli just Rootsist tagasi tulnud, tõi sealt lõnga näidiseid. Esialgu on vaid näidised, hiljem loodetavasti tekib poodi ka päriselt.
Now something informative. I was in Pronksi shop. Anu had just returned from Sweden and brought samples of yarns. At this stage these are just samples; hopefully, soon there will be yarns to buy at the store.

Lõpuks kodus!/Finally at home!
Jõudsin Helsingist koju. Helsingis sain kokku Helenaga, kellele viisin Eestist lõnga. Koos käisime Menita poes. Poe müüjad on hästi sõbralikult ja lubasid seal pildistada. Helena, äitäh pildistamast! Helena, Kiitos kuvista! Piltidel on mu uus vest.
I am back from Helsinki. There I met Helena to whom I brought some Estonian yarn. We visited together Menita yarn shop. The salespersons are really friendly and allowed us to take pictures. Helena, thanks for taking pictures! I am showing my new vest.
Lõng/Yarn: Elotroi Liisu, 100 g /360 m, ~200 g
Vardad/Needles: 3 mm

I have to say that Menita has a great choice of yarns. Behind my back are cotton, linen and rayon-lbend yarns, this is just a small fraction of what they offer. The salespersons knit all the time, which is so nice!

Käisin Akateemises Kirjakaupas, vist parim raamatupood Soomes, kus igasuguste kudumisajakirjade seast avastasin tuttava kaane. Ei midagi muud, kui meie Eesti "Käsitöö"! Ainult soome keelde tõlgituna.

I visited Akateeminen Kirjakauppa, probably the best bookstore in Finland where among numerous knitting magazines I discovered a familiar cover. What else can it be but our Estonian "Käsitöö" (Handycraft)! Translated into Finnish.
It appears like a translation chain. Lithuanians translate their knitting magazines into Estonian and Latvian, we have ours translated into Finnish, so into what language Finns would translate their knitting magazines?

Kuivab/Blocking
Nüüd vest kuivab. Jääb veel pärast viimistleda ja hankida nööbid. Praeguses valguses on värvid väga imelikud; tööötlesin kõvasti ülemise foto, et värv oleks ligilähedane.
Now the vest is drying. I have to weave in the ends and to get some buttons. The colours are really weird in the evening light; I edited the first picture quite a bit in order to get the colour more or less right.
Siin on värv töötlemata:
And here the colour is not edited:
Korralikud pildid jäävad siis tulevikku, sest lähen nüüd kolmeks päevaks Soome. Kindlasti tuleb sealt kudumis- ja lõngauudiseid, aga ilmselt hiljem, kui olen jälle kodus.
Proper pictures will be taken later because I am going to Finland for three days. Sure there will be knitting and yarn news but probably later once I will have returned home.

Anu, aitäh pildistamast!
Anu, thanks for taking pictures!
Nüüd 2010.a. esimene erinuber on pealkirjaga "Palmikkude". Seletab võtteid, on mitme huvitava palmiku skeeme. Nii et ostsin endale.
And something else. As it is known, the magazine "Minu Käsitööd" (My handicraft) has been available in Estonia already for a couple of years. Actually it is a translation from Lithuanian: efficient Lithuanians hav it translated into Estonian and Latvian and sell it in the Baltic countries. We have only one magazine "Käsitöö" (Handicraft), while Lithuanians have several (I cannot speak about other crafts like sewing and embroidery but even speaking of knitting magazines I can name several). A definite pluss is user friendly patterns: no redundant information, charts and figures everywhere. A minus (in my view) is that the garments are overly decorated, sometimes more information about the yarn than just "300 g of woolen yarn" is needed. The magazine has special issues as well. The first special issue of this year is titled "Palmikkude" (Cable knitting). It explains techniques etc and contains some beautiful cable charts. So I bought one for myself.
Kaanepilt/Cover:
It has to be mentioned that the original issue in Lithuanian appeared already in 2008, so that they translate special issues with a delay; other issues seem to be fresh.

No pictures today, hopefully, tomorrow I can show an in-between stage. I hope to finish the torso part tomorrow and then start the button band and the collar.
Muster tundub sobivat päris mitmesugusele lõngale. Lilla mohäärisviitri muster on sarnane, ütleme, praeguse mustri sugulane. Ilmselt jämedam lõng kannatab seda ka.
The stitch pattern seems to be suitable to various yarns. The purple mohair sweater has a similar lace stitch pattern, so to speak, a relative of the present one. Probably, it looks fine in a thicker yarn as well.

Jälle vest ja natuke lõnga/Vest again and some yarn
Käisin täna Pronksi lõngapoes, vaatasin Aade lõngu. Vabrik teeb kogu aeg uusi värve juurde.
Today I was at Pronksi yarnshop and looked at Aade Lõng yarns. The factory produces new colours all the time. Here are lavender 8/2 and dark blue 8/1. The blue one is nicer and brighter, here it looks somewhat gray.

Siin on värv õigem:
Ja nüüd kudumisest. Mõtlesin ühtemoodi, tuleb aga välja teistmoodi. Seekord päris uut moodi ei konstrueeri, uus konstruktsioon tuleb ehk järgmises kudumis. Ja muster on ka teistsugune. Ühesõnaga, hea veel, et pole nii, et alustab salli kuduma ja lõpuks koob valmis soki!
Now about knitting. I had in mind a certain thing but it turned out in another way. This time I am not introducing a new construction, maybe in the next project. And the lace stitch pattern is different. To put it short, at least it is good that it was not like starting a shawl and ending up with a sock!
Muster:
Ülemine osa on valmis. See ongi kõige kriitilisem osa, kui see on korras, muu on juba selge.
The upper part is ready. This is the most critical part, if and when it is fine, all the rest is clear.

The Fabulous Sugar Doll Award
Sain Elianalt sellise autasu. Tänan! Nüüd peab enda kohta rääkima 10 asja.
I got this award from Eliana. Thank you! Now I have to tell 10 things about myself.
2. Enamasti koon ringvarrastega; väikse diameetri puhul kasutan ka sukkavardaid. Tavalisi sirgeid vardaid aga praktiliselt ei kasuta.
Mostly I use circular needles; when knitting a small diametre I use also DPNs. I practically never use usual straight needles.
3. Mulle meeldib abilõngaga alustamine.
I like provisional cast-on.
4. Mu lemmikvärvid on must, hall, lilla, tumepunane ja roheline.
My favourite colours are black, gray, purple, dark red and green.
5. Aeg-ajalt meeldib mulle kududa midagi jämedamate varrastega.
From time to time I like to knit with thicker needles.
6. Ma ei ole kunagi kudunud linast lõnga, kuigi tahaks proovida (eriti vaadates Leedu käsitööd).
I've never knit linen but I would like to try (especially looking at Lithuanian crafts).
7. Enamasti on mul üks asi töös, mõnikord olude sunnil kaks, kuid püüan selliseid olukordi vältida.
Mostly I work on one project at a time; sometimes I have to work on two projects (not that I want it) but I try to avoid such situations.
I have not knit cotton (however, I've tried cotton-rayon blend from Drops, it was really nice), soon I will try.
I can knit on orders but only in case I like what I am knitting.
10. Hea meelega jagan mõtteid disainist ja konstruktsioonidest.
I gladly share my ideas on designing and construction of knitwear.
Nüüd peaksin valima need, kellele läheb autasu. Kirjutagu siis enda kohta 10 asja.

Now I have to choose those who get the award. They have to write 10 things about themselves.

Lilla/Purple
Midagi uut: seekord midagi lillat. Lõng on Elotroi Liisu, puhas villane, 100 g /360 m, vardad 3 mm. Muster on juba tuttav siit.
Something new, this time something purple. Yarn is Elotroi Liisu, Estonian pure wool 100 g/360 m, needles 3 mm. You already know the stitch pattern from here.
Proovilapp:
Swatch:
It is nice that the yarn does not stretch after washing and the dimond pattern is rather clear.
Siin on juba "päris" kudumine:
Here is a "real" piece of knitting:
Muidugi tekib küsimus, et mida ma siin koon. Praegu niipalju, et katsetan üht konstruktsiooni. Kui õnnestub, siis luban pikemat seletust.

Of course one may ask what it is that I intend to knit. For now let us say that I am trying a certain construction. If it works out, a more detailed explanation is in store.
About the vest: I thought that 2 vests in the same colour from a bulky yarn is not a terribly rational thing. So I gave the cable vest as a present to a person who had asked once whether I could kinit her a vest.

Valmis/FO
Vest on valmis.
The vest is finished. First of all, here is the picture of the cable. I've knit cables before and now rediscovered and started liking them. I believe it is not exactly flattering when there are too many cables but they come nice in this yarn.

Lõng/Yarn: Mela (70 % vill/wool, 30 % alpaka/alpaca) ~26o g
Vardad/Needles: 6 mm, kaeluse ääristus/collar edge 5.5 mm
Konstruktsioon on ikka sama: alustasin abilõngaga (mõtteline õlaõmblus), kudusin selja- ja esitükid, ühendasin, kudusin kuni soovitud pikkuseni, võtsin kaeluse silmad üles ja tegin ääre, samuti tegin väikse ääre käeaukude ümber.
The construction is the same: I started with provisional cast on (imaginary shoulder seam) and knitted back and front pieces, then joind them and knitted as long as I wanted, then I picked up the stitches around the neck and made the edge and made a small edge around armholes.

Jätkub + 1 õpetus/Progress + 1 pattern
Jätkan halli vesti. Nüüd on selja- ja esitükid ühendatud, tuleb ühendada eest ja kududa ringselt. Võib-olla tuleb keskele mõni palmik, et poleks igav kududa.
The gray vest is in progress. Now the back and front parts are joined and I have to join in the front and knit in rounds. Maybe there will be a cable in the middle so that knitting will not be borring.

Nüüd üks õpetus või õpetuse moodi asi. Ravelrys on küsitud Lilla variatsiooni-nimelise sviitri kohta. Muidugi põhineb konstruktsioon Mohääriminimalismi konstruktsioonil. Minimalism ongi niisuguse nimega, kuna see on konstruktsioon puhtal kujul, edasi võib lisada mustreid, mängida varrukate pikkusega jne. Dagmara on teinud päris ilusa improvisatsiooni sel teemal, ainult muster on teistsugune, vt siit ja siit. Lõngaks mohäär 220-240 m/25 g, vardad nr 4.
Now a pattern or a kind of pattern. On Raverly I have been asked about the sweater called Lilla variatsioon. Of course, its construction is based on that of Mohair minimalist top. Minimalist top has this name because this is the construction as such and you can modify it by adding lace patterns, playing with the sleeve length etc. Dagmara has done a beautiful improvisation on the topic, only with a different lace pattern, see here and here. Yarn: mohair 220-240m/25 g, needles 4 mm.
Lõin 65 silma, ühendasin ja kudusin ringselt labases parempidises koes. Soovitan mõnda silmaloomismeetodit, mis tekitab lõdva ääre. Erinevalt põhikonstruktsioonist on see sviiter kõrge rullkraega. Tuleb lihtsalt kududa parajalt pikk toru. Kokku on 100 silma. Edasi kudusin paar ringi labases parempidises ja alustasin mustrit. Silmade arv jagub 10-ga. NB! Tagasiread mustri järgi: so parempidine silmus parempidi, pahempidine pahempidi jne, ringse kudumise puhul koome õhksilmad parempidi.
CO 65 st, join and work in rounds in stockinette stitch. I recommend a method that allows for a loose edge. Differently from the basic construction this sweater has a high collar. You just have to knit a sufficiently long tube. When the tube and the yoke part are ready, increase after each stitch (the number of the stitches is doubled), now you have 130 st. Then knit more until you have to separate the sleeves. Then put aside 25 stitches (differently from the basic construction I did not bind off because the sweater has long sleeves), knit 40 st, then again put aside 25 st for the second sleeve, then knit 40 st again. In the next row, CO 10 st (the lower pat of the armhole), knit 40, then again CO 10 st and knit 40 st. Put a marker to designate the beginning/end of the row. You have 100 st now. Work some rounds in stockinette stitch and then start the lace pattern. The repeat for the lace pattern is 10 st. NB! Back rows are knit according to what you see: knit knit stitches, purl purl stitches; when working in rounds, knit yarnovers in back rows.
Muster/Lace pattern:
Siis kudusin niipalju, kuni pikkus oli paras. Tuleb kogu aeg selga proovida.
Then I knit to reach the wished length. I highly recommend trying on as you go. Finally, I knit a couple of rows in stockinette stitch and BO loosely. For the sleeves I took the 25 stitches (put aside earlier) + picked up 10 st (the lower part of the armhole). If you feel it is too narrow, you can add some more stitches. Then knit in rounds in stockinette untill you have the length you want. BO loosely.

Mitte midagi huvitavat/Nothing interesting
Really, nothing interesting. Honestly speaking one should ask where my memory was. I had an idea of a vest from a thicker yarn and I saw one such yarn named Mela (on bobbins) at Pronksi yarn shop. I bought some and started knitting, realizing that for my initial idea it is a bit too thik. Fine, I decided to make another vest. Still I had some doubts.
Lõng:/Yarn:
Kahtlused polnud kudumi suhtes. Alustasin abilõngaga õlajoonelt ja kudusin tagaosa kuni käeauguni (selline viis hakkas meeldima).
My doubts were not about the knitwork itself. I started with a provisional cast on from the shoulder line and had the back part till the armholes (I am liking this construction).
And now please see this minimalist tube named Kiirkaerapuder, more explanations on Ravelry.
Jah, lõng pole muidugi päris sama, Kiirkaerapuder on kootud vardaga 12, praegune hall on 6-ga.
Of course the yarn is not identical, Kiirkaerapuder was knit on needles 12 mm and the present gray vest is on 6 mm. The colour is not exactly the same. But yes, I have such an inclination to want grey yarn whenever I see one.
Mul pole pooleli kudumeid. Asi on lausa koomiline.
I don't have UFOs. If I absolutely dislike what I am doing, then I frog and the yarn waits for better times. I try not to stash to much. So I will finish this vest and maybe it will be a present for somebody. This is really funny.
